Adobe releases new AI assistants for its Express and Photoshop applications to help users with image creation and editing. Unlike traditional sidebar implementations, the Express assistant features a dedicated mode where users rely entirely on text prompts to generate new designs, allowing them to toggle back to standard editing tools as needed. In contrast, the Photoshop assistant operates from a sidebar in closed beta and uses on-screen context to automatically select objects, create masks, and handle repetitive tasks like background removal.
Adobe Vice President of Generative AI Alexandru Costin explains that the dual-mode approach in Express targets both students and professionals by making the technology accessible yet controllable. The company also reveals "Project Moonlight," an early-stage private beta that acts as a meta-assistant to coordinate across different Adobe tools. This experimental feature connects to a creator's social channels to learn their specific style and streamline the overall design workflow.
Beyond these assistants, Adobe expands its Creative Cloud capabilities by allowing Photoshop users to select third-party models like Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash and FLUX.1 Kontext for generative fill tasks. Additionally, Premiere Pro receives an AI-powered object mask tool that enables video editors to easily identify and select people or objects to apply effects or adjust colors. Adobe is also exploring a direct integration with ChatGPT through OpenAI's app API to let users create designs without leaving the chat interface.
