More than 25 companies currently compete in the AI chip market, offering diverse hardware solutions for data center, mobile, and edge workloads. Based on cloud GPU benchmarks, vendors range from dominant GPU manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD to specialized startups and public cloud providers developing their own silicon.
These companies utilize two primary architectures: general-purpose GPUs and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). While GPUs provide flexibility to handle various AI training and inference tasks, ASICs deliver superior performance per watt for specific operations. Some ASICs, like Google TPU and AWS Trainium, support both training and inference, while others, like Groq LPU, focus strictly on inference.
The demand for low-latency processing also drives rapid innovation in edge AI chips that perform computations locally on devices. As AI server shipments increase, TrendForce projects that custom ASIC shipments from cloud providers grow 44.6% in 2026, highlighting a major industry shift toward specialized hardware.
