AI Coding Startup Anysphere Raises $60 Million at $400 Million Valuation

Anysphere, the maker of the AI coding assistant Cursor, secures a $60 million Series A round co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital. The massive investment highlights the surging demand for tools that help developers write software faster.

Anysphere, a two-year-old startup that creates an AI-powered coding assistant called Cursor, raises over $60 million in a Series A round at a $400 million post-money valuation. Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital co-lead the investment, with Stripe CEO Patrick Collison also participating in the funding. The MIT-educated founders previously secured an $11 million seed round led by the OpenAI Startup Fund.

The startup competes in a crowded market of AI coding tools that aim to make software development more efficient. Competitors include Cognition, Poolside, Magic, and Augment, all chasing the tremendous demand for developer productivity software. Microsoft's GitHub Copilot currently dominates this space and reportedly generates more revenue today than GitHub's entire business did when Microsoft acquired it for $7.5 billion in 2018.

Investors see massive financial potential in this sector, as an estimated three million developers currently pay $100 a year for AI coding subscriptions. Anysphere experiences rapid growth in both revenue and user adoption as it pushes its Cursor product against established rivals. The new capital gives the startup significant resources to compete for market share in this highly lucrative landscape.
