AI Coding Startup Codeium Reaches $1.25 Billion Valuation in New Funding Round

Codeium, a rival to GitHub Copilot, raises $150 million in a Series C round that pushes its valuation to $1.25 billion. The startup boasts over 700,000 users and counts major enterprises like Dell and Zillow among its customers.

Codeium, an AI-powered coding assistant competing directly with GitHub Copilot, achieves unicorn status after closing a $150 million Series C funding round led by General Catalyst. This new investment values the startup at $1.25 billion post-money, representing a massive increase from its $500 million valuation just eight months ago. The company raises this substantial capital despite having barely touched the $65 million it secured in a previous January round.

Founded in 2021 by MIT graduates Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, the company originally focuses on GPU optimization under the name Exafunction before pivoting to generative coding in 2022. Codeium differentiates itself by providing AI-generated suggestions that understand the context of an entire codebase rather than just offering generic code snippets. The platform supports approximately 70 programming languages and integrates seamlessly with popular development environments like Microsoft Visual Studio and JetBrains.

To draw developers away from established rivals, Codeium employs a generous free-tier strategy that successfully builds a massive user base. The startup currently serves over 700,000 individual users and more than 1,000 enterprise clients, including high-profile companies like Anduril, Zillow, and Dell. Leadership plans to use the newly acquired funds to aggressively ramp up research and development, accelerate growth, and place larger strategic bets in the competitive AI coding market.
