Codeium raises $150 million in a Series C funding round led by General Catalyst, achieving a $1.25 billion valuation that officially makes the AI coding assistant a unicorn. The funding round includes participation from existing investors Kleiner Perkins and Greenoaks, bringing the total capital raised by the three-year-old startup to $243 million. Notably, the company secures this massive investment without even tapping into its previous $65 million Series B round from January.

The startup directly competes with GitHub Copilot by offering an AI-powered platform that supports approximately 70 programming languages and integrates with popular environments like Visual Studio and JetBrains. A major advantage for Codeium is its proprietary Cortex engine, an AI reasoning system that increases retrieval recall by 200% compared to leading embedding systems. Additionally, Cortex operates 40 times faster and 1,000 times cheaper than traditional third-party APIs, allowing developers to handle large-scale code generation and complex reviews in minutes rather than hours.

Codeium experiences explosive growth, currently serving over 700,000 users and more than 1,000 enterprise clients, including major companies like Dell, Zillow, and Anduril. The startup reaches eight-figure revenue this year, with annual recurring revenue surging by over 500% since early 2024. To address enterprise security concerns, Codeium provides a self-hosted installation option, guarantees strong encryption for all data transmission, and strictly refuses to train its models on user data or sell user information.
