Artificial intelligence drives a massive surge in global data center energy consumption, with these facilities using approximately 415 TWh of electricity in 2024 alone. This figure represents about 1.5% of total global electricity consumption, as technology companies invest billions to build facilities packed with GPUs and AI accelerators. In the United States, data centers consume an estimated 180 TWh, accounting for 4 to 5 percent of the nation's total electricity use.

The pace of this growth remains extraordinary, with global data center electricity consumption increasing by roughly 12 percent annually over the past five years. Installed capacity in North America reflects this rapid expansion, reaching 6,350 MW by the end of 2024, which is more than double the capacity from the previous year. A single large AI-focused data center now requires as much power as 100,000 homes.

This exploding demand creates significant challenges for IT and energy managers who must navigate strained local power grids and complex environmental impacts. However, the crisis also generates substantial investment opportunities, particularly in renewable energy sources and advanced grid infrastructure needed to support these massive computing hubs through 2026 and beyond.
