A new Bloomberg report suggests that the rapid expansion of AI data centers causes significant distortions in the US power grid. By analyzing data from Whisker Labs sensors and DC Byte, researchers discover that more than half of the households experiencing the worst power quality issues live within 20 miles of major data center operations.

This phenomenon, known as "bad harmonics," refers to an irregular flow of electrical power that poses serious risks to nearby residents. The distorted power potentially destroys household appliances, increases the risk of electrical fires, and contributes to regional brownouts and blackouts.

AI data centers present a particularly severe challenge because their energy requirements fluctuate wildly, placing unprecedented stress on local infrastructure. While experts warn that no grid is designed to handle simultaneous load fluctuations from multiple data centers, at least one major utility provider strongly questions the accuracy of these sensor-based claims.
