AI Funding Hits $110 Billion as Overall Startup Investments Decline
AI startup investments surge 62 percent to reach $110 billion in 2024, while broader tech funding drops 12 percent. Dealroom data highlights this unprecedented investment wave as the largest ever by absolute value.
New data from Dealroom reveals that AI startups raise $110 billion in 2024, marking a massive 62 percent increase from the previous year. This explosive growth stands in sharp contrast to the broader technology sector, where overall startup and scale-up funding drops 12 percent to $227 billion. Venture capitalists clearly prioritize AI ventures while remaining highly selective about other types of technology investments.
Dealroom founder Yoram Wijngaarde describes this AI investment boom as the biggest wave ever seen in terms of absolute amounts invested. The surge spans a wide ecosystem that includes hardware, infrastructure, foundational models, and applications. Major companies like Databricks, Anthropic, Waymo, Anduril, and xAI lead the pack, with Databricks actually raising more money in 2024 than OpenAI.
Generative AI emerges as the primary engine driving this venture capital activity, with companies in this category pulling in $47.4 billion during the year. Foundational AI technology also sees tremendous growth and claims a giant slice of the funding. The report coincides with the French government's AI Action Summit in Paris, where global leaders discuss how to champion future AI development.
