AI-Generated Portrait Sells for $432,500 at Christie's Auction

An artificial intelligence program creates a painting that sells for an impressive $432,500 at a Christie's auction. The artwork, titled Portrait of Edmond Belamy, easily surpasses its high estimate by nearly 45 times during the Prints & Multiples sale. This historic sale marks the first time a major auction house sells a piece of AI art.
A Paris-based art collective known as Obvious produces the piece using a generative adversarial network (GAN). The group feeds the algorithm a data set of 15,000 historical portraits spanning from the 14th to the 20th century. Instead of a traditional artist signature, the blurry portrait features the mathematical equation used to generate the image.
The massive sale price sparks widespread media speculation about the future of art and technology. Obvious member Hugo Caselles-Dupré explains that portraits best illustrate how algorithms emulate creativity. Meanwhile, Christie's specialist Richard Lloyd notes that while AI definitely impacts the future art market, it remains far too early to predict the exact nature of those changes.
