AI Investment Booms as Ten New Machine Learning Unicorns Emerge

Despite a broader slowdown in tech venture capital, artificial intelligence startups continue to attract massive funding and produce new billion-dollar companies.

Technology venture capital deals slow down overall, but investment in artificial intelligence companies continues to boom. Research from IDC shows that investments in AI research and applications are on track to hit $500 billion by 2024, while PwC predicts AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Because of this massive financial momentum, a large portion of the 206 new privately held startups valued over $1 billion in 2022 belong to the artificial intelligence and machine learning sectors.

Abnormal Security, a cloud-native email security platform based in San Francisco, earns its unicorn status in May 2022 by using behavioral AI to fight complex cyber threats. The company leverages over 45,000 signals from cloud email platforms to detect anomalous messages and block attacks like business email compromise and phishing without relying on traditional indicators of compromise. This AI-driven approach removes the burden from employees to identify threats independently, helping the company grow its customer base by 270% to include major brands like Xerox and Urban Outfitters.

Anthropic, another San Francisco-based startup, reaches unicorn status in April 2022 by focusing on AI safety and system reliability. Founded by former OpenAI VP of research Dario Amodei, the company raises an impressive $704 million in just its first year to build AI systems that are interpretable and steerable. With backing from prominent tech figures and a growing team of over 40 employees, Anthropic represents a critical trend of securing massive funding to address the ethical and operational challenges of large-scale artificial intelligence.
