By mining an unprecedented database of over 6.4 million viral sequences, the machine learning model identifies patterns among mutations that help new strains spread globally.

The system demonstrates remarkable accuracy by successfully forecasting the rise of major COVID-19 threats. PyR0 uses data available in mid-December 2021 to correctly predict that the rare Omicron BA.2 subvariant would soon dominate worldwide, and simulations show it would have anticipated the Alpha variant's rise a month before the World Health Organization designated it a concern.
