He makes this decisive move so he can freely speak out about the dangers of the very technology he helps pioneer, confirming his departure via a public tweet.
Hinton expresses deep concern over the potential misuse of AI, noting that it is difficult to prevent bad actors from exploiting these advanced systems. While he previously consoles himself with the idea that someone else would have eventually developed this technology anyway, he now feels a strong moral obligation to highlight its severe risks to the public.
Although AI promises to revolutionize fields like internet search and scientific research, Hinton warns of serious threats such as widespread job displacement and a flood of misinformation. Furthermore, he fears a future where AI generates its own computer code, potentially leading to the creation of autonomous weapons and proving that artificial intelligence surpassing human intelligence arrives much sooner than previously expected.
