The artwork, titled Portrait of Edmond de Belamy, comes from a Paris-based collective known as Obvious. The group creates images of a fictional Belamy family using an algorithm called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. This specific system consists of two competing parts: a Generator that creates a new image based on a dataset, and a Discriminator that attempts to detect the differences between human-made and machine-made art.

To produce this historic canvas, the Obvious collective feeds their algorithm a data set of 15,000 portraits spanning from the 14th to the 20th century. The resulting blurry, classically styled image challenges traditional definitions of art and leaves the auction house questioning whether "painting" is even the right term to describe the medium.
