A total of $202.3 billion flows into the AI sector this year, marking a dramatic 75% increase from the $114 billion invested in 2024. This massive influx of capital cements AI as the undisputed leader in startup funding for the third consecutive year.
Foundation model developers account for a massive portion of this investment, raising $80 billion in 2025 to represent 40% of all global AI funding. OpenAI and Anthropic lead this charge, standing as the most and fourth-most valuable private companies globally at $500 billion and $183 billion, respectively. Together, these two giants alone capture 14% of all global venture investment this year and make up nearly 10% of the total value on the Crunchbase Unicorn Board.
The United States sets a remarkably high bar in this funding race, with U.S.-based AI companies pulling in 79% of the global total at $159 billion. The San Francisco Bay Area alone attracts $122 billion of that sum, driven by massive billion-dollar rounds led by corporate giants like Meta, Nvidia, and Google. As hyperscalers commit over $300 billion to capital expenditures in 2025, the industry closely watches whether these massive compute needs will continue to fuel equity raises or shift toward strategic partnerships in 2026.
