AI-Written Code Hits Record Share of Linux Kernel Patches
The Lunduke Journal reports yet another record week for AI-assisted development of Linux. According to the post, 1,634 code submissions to the Linux Kernel last week were written by AI, marking a new high point for machine-generated contributions to the project.
The trend extends beyond a single week. So far in September, AI-generated code makes up 17.25% of all Linux Kernel patches, a figure that continues to climb as developers increasingly rely on AI tools to write and refine code.
The growing share of AI-written patches raises ongoing questions about code review, quality control, and the long-term maintenance of one of the world's most important open source projects. If the trend holds, AI could become one of the largest sources of kernel contributions in the near future.
