Airtel Deploys Free AI Network Defense Against India's Endless Spam Calls

Bharti Airtel launches a free, network-based AI system that automatically identifies and flags spam calls and texts for its 387 million subscribers. The telecom giant processes billions of daily communications to block malicious links and urges stricter regulations for messaging apps like WhatsApp.

Bharti Airtel introduces a free, AI-powered spam-detection system that automatically activates for all 387 million of its wireless subscribers in India. The telecom operator positions this as the country's first network-based artificial intelligence solution to tackle the relentless daily barrage of unwanted calls and text messages that plague 95% of Indian phone users.

The new system employs a dual-layer protection mechanism to analyze a massive volume of 2.5 billion calls and 1.5 billion messages daily. Proprietary algorithms evaluate caller usage patterns, frequency, and duration in real time to flag up to 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam texts every single day.

Beyond simply flagging suspicious numbers, the AI scans text messages for malicious links by cross-referencing them against a centralized blacklist of fraudulent URLs to prevent phishing attacks. Airtel's leadership also uses this rollout to publicly urge Indian regulators to impose stricter oversight on messaging platforms like WhatsApp to further protect consumers from digital spam.
