Alibaba Claims New Qwen3.8-Max AI Model Rivals Top US Systems
Chinese tech giant Alibaba releases Qwen3.8-Max, which it calls its largest and most capable AI model to date. The company claims the model rivals the best systems from US frontier labs including Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as domestic competitors like Moonshot AI's Kimi K3. Alibaba makes the model widely available to users, fulfilling expectations set when it previewed the system last month and claimed it was second only to Anthropic's flagship Fable 5.
Early results appear to support Alibaba's bold claims. The company's own testing shows Qwen3.8-Max broadly matches and sometimes exceeds Fable 5 on benchmark tests. On the crowdsourced Arena.AI leaderboard, the model trails only Fable 5 and three models in Anthropic's Opus family. It also performs impressively in specialized categories, ranking near the top for frontend coding and visual analysis tasks.
The open release of another highly capable Chinese AI model intensifies already sky-high tensions between Silicon Valley and Washington. Policymakers and tech leaders continue to grapple with how to safely manage AI systems while maintaining America's technological edge over China. As Chinese companies consistently close the gap with their US counterparts, the competitive pressure mounts on all sides to push the boundaries of what these systems can achieve.
