Alibaba Debuts Hanguang 800 Chip to Accelerate AI Tasks
Alibaba unveils its first AI inference chip, the Hanguang 800, which dramatically speeds up machine learning operations for its e-commerce platforms. The new chip helps reduce reliance on US technology and will eventually be offered to Alibaba Cloud customers.
Alibaba introduces its first artificial intelligence inference chip, the Hanguang 800, designed to make machine learning tasks significantly faster and more energy efficient. Developed by the company's T-Head research unit, the neural processing unit makes its debut at the Alibaba Cloud Apsara Computing Conference in Hangzhou.
The tech giant already uses the new chip to power critical features on its e-commerce platforms, such as product search, personalized recommendations, automatic translation, and customer service. For example, the Hanguang 800 reduces the time needed to categorize one billion daily product images on Taobao from one hour to just five minutes.
While Alibaba keeps the exact release date under wraps, the company plans to offer the chip's capabilities to its cloud customers in the near future. This strategic move potentially helps Chinese businesses reduce their reliance on American technology amid ongoing trade tensions and boosts Alibaba Cloud's competitiveness against Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in the broader Asia-Pacific market.
