Alibaba Launches ChatGPT Rival as Beijing Announces AI Regulations
Alibaba introduces its generative AI model, Tongyi Qianwen, to compete with ChatGPT and integrate it across its applications. Simultaneously, the Chinese government releases draft rules requiring all AI-generated content to align with core socialist values.
Chinese technology giant Alibaba unveils Tongyi Qianwen, a new generative artificial intelligence model designed to rival ChatGPT. The AI system demonstrates capabilities such as drafting invitation letters, planning trip itineraries, and providing shopping advice for makeup. CEO Daniel Zhang states that this technology brings significant changes to production, work, and daily life.
The company integrates the new AI model into its workplace messaging app, DingTalk, where it helps users summarize meeting notes, write emails, and draft business proposals. Additionally, Alibaba adds the tool to its Tmall Genie voice assistant. The cloud division plans to open the model to clients on Friday so they can build customized large language models.
Following this unveiling, the Cyberspace Administration of China publishes draft rules for managing generative AI services. While the government supports AI innovation, it mandates that all generated content strictly adhere to "core socialist values" and comply with data security laws. Violators of these new regulations face potential fines or criminal investigations.
