Alphabet's Sidewalk Labs Abandons Toronto Smart City Project
Sidewalk Labs cancels its Quayside smart city development in Toronto due to unprecedented economic uncertainty that makes the project financially unviable. The company plans to keep its local office and pursue its urban innovations through other ventures.
Sidewalk Labs officially cancels its plans to build a smart city neighbourhood on Toronto's waterfront. The Alphabet subsidiary states that unprecedented economic uncertainty makes the 12-acre Quayside project too difficult to finance without sacrificing core elements of its vision. The company notifies Waterfront Toronto of its decision after two-and-a-half years of collaborative planning.
CEO Dan Doctoroff explains that while thousands of Torontonians express excitement about creating a sustainable and affordable community, current financial realities prevent the project from moving forward. Despite this cancellation, Sidewalk Labs maintains its 30-person office in Toronto and continues developing specific innovations like mass timber construction and digital master-planning tools.
The company redirects its urban infrastructure focus toward other existing ventures, such as the newly formed Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP). Backed by Alphabet and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, SIP independently invests in technology-enabled infrastructure projects across North America. Waterfront Toronto remains optimistic, noting that this development marks the first day of Quayside's future rather than its end.
