Alphabet's Waymo Reaches $45 Billion Valuation After Major Funding Round
Waymo secures a staggering $45 billion valuation following a $5.6 billion funding round led by Alphabet. The autonomous vehicle company currently completes over 150,000 paid robotaxi trips weekly as it expands into new cities.
Waymo achieves a staggering $45 billion valuation after securing $5.6 billion in fresh capital led by its parent company Alphabet. The recent funding round features outside investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, and Silver Lake. This massive financial boost provides Waymo with the resources needed to scale its autonomous driving operations significantly.
The company currently completes over 150,000 paid robotaxi trips each week, marking a tenfold increase compared to the previous year. Waymo operates fully driverless services in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, and initiates freeway driving without safety drivers. Through a new partnership with Uber, Waymo plans to expand its reach into Austin and Atlanta.
Despite occasional setbacks like a minor collision with a cyclist earlier this year, Waymo stands as a leader in the self-driving industry. The company tests its technology in additional markets like Buffalo and Washington, DC. However, Waymo faces looming competition from Tesla, which recently unveiled its own Cybercab robotaxi concept but still relies on human safety drivers for its current ride-hailing service.
