The deal brings fully autonomous cart systems into Amazon's fulfillment centers, acting much like self-driving cars inside a warehouse environment. Founded in 2015, Canvas builds impressive machines that navigate crowded spaces using 3D imaging and proprietary software. These autonomous carts expertly avoid obstacles and people without needing dedicated fenced-off zones. This technology positions Canvas as a direct competitor to other warehouse robotics firms and provides Amazon with a powerful new tool for its facilities.
This acquisition expands upon the foundation Amazon built after buying Kiva Systems in 2012, a move that currently deploys around 100,000 robotic units across 25 fulfillment centers. By integrating Canvas's built-in safety vision systems, Amazon continues its push to increase delivery efficiency through automation while addressing workplace safety concerns for its human employees.
