This new option allows users to access in-depth news coverage from major providers including Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, Newsy, and NPR. The addition caters to the significant demand for news content, as nearly half of voice assistant users regularly ask their smart speakers for news updates.
Users access these extended news sessions by using voice commands like "Alexa, play news" or by specifying a particular source. The feature offers curated stories from the chosen provider, such as popular NPR radio shows or CNN's top headlines. Screen-equipped devices like the Echo Show display video news for providers like Newsy and CNBC, while other sources deliver audio-only content that users navigate with commands like "Alexa, next."
The setup process causes some user confusion due to its integration with the existing Flash Briefing settings menu. Existing Flash Briefing users continue to receive their quick headline summaries unless they specifically request a named source to trigger the long-form format. This overlapping command structure means users must learn slightly different phrasing to access the deeper news content they want.
