Amazon invests up to $4 billion in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic as the e-commerce giant competes with Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Nvidia in the rapidly expanding AI sector. The company begins with an initial investment of $1.25 billion for a minority stake and holds an option to increase the total funding to the full $4 billion amount.
Anthropic plans to use this massive financial injection to develop "Claude-Next," a frontier model that aims to be ten times more capable than today's most powerful AI systems. Building this advanced model requires approximately $1 billion in spending over the next 18 months, making Amazon's deep pockets and strategic resources essential for Anthropic's ambitious roadmap.
As part of the agreement, Anthropic selects Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, safety research, and future foundation model development. The AI startup also relies on AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its models, while Amazon integrates Anthropic's technology into its Bedrock service to offer enhanced generative AI capabilities to its cloud customers.
