Amazon pledges up to $4 billion in the AI startup Anthropic as the e-commerce giant intensifies its competition with Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Nvidia. The initial investment stands at $1.25 billion for a minority stake, with an option to increase the total funding to the full $4 billion. Anthropic operates a popular AI chatbot called Claude and recently launches a premium consumer subscription plan.
This financial partnership provides Anthropic with the massive capital required to develop its next-generation "Claude-Next" model, which aims to be ten times more capable than current AI systems. In return, Anthropic designates Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider for safety research and foundation model development. The startup relies on AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train, and deploy these advanced models.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expresses that this deeper collaboration significantly enhances customer experiences through services like Amazon Bedrock. By combining Anthropic's cutting-edge AI models with AWS's extensive cloud infrastructure, Amazon positions itself as a major force in the generative AI market.
