Amazon Ends Support for Physical Dash Buttons This Month
Amazon officially shuts down its physical Dash buttons on August 31st due to significantly declining user activity. However, the company continues to support virtual Dash buttons and built-in Dash Replenishment smart appliances.
Amazon officially retires its physical Dash buttons on August 31st, 2019, bringing an end to the quirky household ordering devices. The company stops selling the hardware earlier this year and now shuts down all support because customer usage drops significantly in recent months.
While the standalone plastic buttons go dark, Amazon continues to support other versions of the technology. Users still access virtual Dash buttons inside the Amazon app, and smart appliances that utilize the Dash Replenishment Service continue to order their own supplies automatically.
The hardware attracts a dedicated following of modders who reprogram the buttons for custom internet scripts, such as automating a daily Starbucks order. For remaining physical buttons that become useless after August 31st, Amazon urges customers to send the devices to its recycling program which covers all shipping and disposal costs.
