Amazon Launches AI Vision Service to Catch Manufacturing Defects
Amazon introduces Lookout for Vision, a cloud service that uses computer vision to automatically spot product anomalies on manufacturing lines. The tool requires as few as 30 images to train an AI model and operates on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Amazon launches the general availability of Amazon Lookout for Vision, a cloud service that uses computer vision to detect defects and anomalies in manufactured goods. The tool trains AI models using as few as 30 baseline images and is now accessible through the AWS console in select regions. This release aims to reduce the significant percentage of manufacturing downtime caused by human error.
Lookout for Vision spots issues like cracks, dents, incorrect colors, and irregular shapes by processing thousands of images per hour. Customers pay only for the hours they use the service to train models and detect defects, avoiding upfront commitments or minimum fees. The system reports any deviations from the baseline through a dashboard or a real-time API.
The service maintains accuracy despite changes in camera angle, pose, and lighting in various work environments. Users provide feedback on predictions so the underlying model automatically retrains and continuously improves. Early adopters like GE Healthcare and Dafgards already use the technology to automate production line inspections, while Amazon's own Print-On-Demand facility applies it to scale book printing operations.
