Amazon Launches Local Shops Program in India to Rival Facebook-Jio Partnership

Amazon introduces "Local Shops on Amazon" to digitize neighborhood stores across India, shortly after Facebook's massive investment in Reliance Jio. The initiative builds on Amazon's previous efforts to integrate local kirana shops into its e-commerce network.

Amazon launches a new initiative called "Local Shops on Amazon" to connect customers with neighborhood stores in India, escalating the competition to capture the lucrative local retail market. This move comes just a day after Facebook invests $5.7 billion in Reliance Jio Platforms to serve tens of millions of similar local shops. Through this program, local retailers display their goods on the Amazon platform and handle deliveries themselves, though they have the option to partner with Amazon for orders outside their immediate area.

The e-commerce giant reveals that it already pilots the program over the past six months, successfully onboarding 5,000 shops across more than 100 cities. These local stores offer a wide variety of products, ranging from consumer electronics and groceries to apparel, fresh flowers, and cakes. To support this expansion, Amazon pledges Rs10 Crores to scale the program and help local shopkeepers leverage Amazon's technology to grow their digital footprint.

This latest effort represents an expansion of Amazon's ongoing strategy to integrate traditional Indian neighborhood stores, known as kiranas, into its digital ecosystem. Previous programs like "I have space" and "Amazon Easy" already partner with local shops for storage, delivery, and assisting first-time online shoppers with digital transactions. These combined efforts highlight how essential physical neighborhood stores remain in India's evolving e-commerce landscape.
