This 219,000-square-foot complex spans two buildings and contains office space, research labs, and prototype manufacturing areas for satellite hardware production. The new facility shows a strong commitment from Amazon to develop a high-speed satellite network that targets underserved communities.
The Kuiper project aims to deliver internet connectivity through a large constellation of small satellites operating in low Earth orbit. This modern approach contrasts with older satellite internet methods that rely on a few large geostationary satellites, ultimately promising wider coverage, faster speeds, and lower costs. Amazon faces significant competition in this space, as SpaceX actively launches its Starlink satellites, OneWeb prepares its own constellation deployment, and Alphabet continues testing its Loon balloon project.
Despite the ramp-up in infrastructure and personnel, Amazon does not yet provide a public timeline for when Kuiper services will be available to customers. The company anticipates that team members will begin moving into the new Redmond site next year to continue their work. Launching thousands of satellites requires multiple rocket missions over several years, making this a long-term effort to bridge the global digital divide.
