Amazon introduces the general availability of Amazon Lookout for Vision, a cloud service that leverages computer vision to identify product defects and anomalies in manufactured goods. Available through the AWS console in select regions, the service stands out because it requires as few as 30 baseline images to successfully train an AI model for visual inspection.
Human error causes significant problems in manufacturing, accounting for 23% of unplanned downtime according to a Vanson Bourne study. Lookout for Vision combats these costly mistakes by using artificial intelligence to detect issues like cracks, dents, incorrect colors, and irregular shapes. The service processes thousands of images per hour and operates on a pay-by-the-hour model without requiring upfront commitments or minimum fees.
After analyzing images, the service reports visual deviations through a dashboard or a real-time API while maintaining accuracy despite changes in camera angles or lighting. Customers provide feedback on the predictions, allowing the system to automatically retrain its underlying model for continuous improvement. Early adopters like GE Healthcare and Dafgards already use the tool, with Dafgards relying on it to verify toppings on pizzas and other food products.
