Amazon Unveils AI-Powered Alexa+ to Rival ChatGPT and Gemini
Amazon launches Alexa+, a generative AI upgrade that turns the voice assistant into an action-oriented agent capable of coordinating complex daily tasks. The revamped service relies on models from Anthropic and Amazon's own Nova to compete with leading AI competitors.
Amazon unveils Alexa+, a major generative AI upgrade that transforms the ten-year-old virtual assistant into an action-oriented service capable of coordinating complex tasks. Instead of just answering simple questions, the new Alexa manages interconnected activities like booking restaurant tables, scheduling rides, and texting caregivers all at once. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reveals the upgrade at a New York City event, calling the remarkable technology a culmination of several months of intense development.
The launch addresses Amazon's urgent need to catch up to newer AI competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini after facing significant delays since initially teasing the revamp over a year ago. To power this advanced experience, Amazon combines its own Nova large language models with technology from Anthropic, an AI startup in which Amazon invests heavily. The company integrates these models with third-party services like Uber, GrubHub, and TicketMaster to create what executives describe as the largest integration of agentic AI capabilities anywhere.
Amazon shows strong confidence in the revamped assistant by implementing a $20 monthly subscription fee for general consumers, though Prime members receive access for free. The upgraded experience rolls out to a limited group of customers in March and works seamlessly across existing Alexa devices, new smart home hardware, a dedicated Alexa app, and a new Alexa.com website. This multi-platform approach ensures users interact with the AI agent wherever they need hands-free help.
