Despite boasting over 900,000 registered developers and 130,000 published skills, Amazon struggles to solve the core challenge of helping customers find voice apps on largely audio-only devices. Most Alexa device owners stick to basic functions like smart home control, playing music, and setting alarms, while the company's original vision for Alexa as a major voice shopping platform falls short of expectations.
To tackle these discovery issues, Amazon allows developers to create visual Widgets and Featured Skill Cards for Echo Show devices, essentially making app discovery function more like a traditional mobile smartphone. For voice-only hardware, the platform now enables skills to be suggested contextually when users make common requests like asking for a story or a workout, though this heavy pivot to visual interfaces raises questions about the long-term viability of voice-only smart speakers.
