Amazon Upgrades Prime Free Shipping Default From Two Days to One

Amazon plans to replace its standard two-day Prime shipping with a one-day delivery option. The company invests $800 million in infrastructure to make this faster shipping a reality throughout 2019.

Amazon evolves its Prime membership program by changing the default free shipping option from two days to just one day. While the retail giant already offers one-day shipping on select orders, CFO Brian Olsavsky confirms that the company is actively working to make this faster speed the new standard for all Prime-eligible purchases.

To accomplish this ambitious logistics goal, Amazon invests approximately $800 million to update its infrastructure and build out additional fulfillment centers. The company also shifts thousands of employees to increase fulfillment capacity, though the effort relies heavily on third-party delivery partners like UPS, FedEx, and the US Postal Service.

Amazon plans to build most of this new one-day shipping capacity throughout 2019. Although it remains unclear if the upgraded service is fully ready for the upcoming holiday season, Olsavsky reports that the company makes steady progress toward achieving this faster delivery benchmark.
