Amazon's Q3 Profit Drops as Inflation and E-Commerce Slowdown Bite

Amazon reports a sharp decline in Q3 2022 operating and net income due to shifting shopping habits and inflation, while its cloud division remains profitable. The company's stock plunges after issuing a shockingly vague financial forecast for the upcoming holiday quarter.

Amazon experiences a significant drop in profit for the third quarter of 2022 as post-pandemic shopping shifts and rising inflation negatively impact its retail operations. The tech giant reports an operating income of $2.5 billion, down sharply from $4.9 billion in the same period last year, and records an actual operating loss in its North American segment.

The company's international retail division fares even worse, posting a $2.5 billion operating loss compared to a $900 million loss the prior year. Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the sole bright spot, generating $5.4 billion in operating income, although this figure represents a slight decrease from the previous quarter.

Investors react poorly to the earnings report and a surprisingly vague Q4 forecast that predicts operating income between zero and four billion dollars, causing the stock to plummet roughly twenty percent in after-hours trading. CEO Andy Jassy acknowledges the tough macroeconomic environment and notes that the company is actively streamlining its bloated pandemic-era fulfillment network to reduce costs moving forward.
