Ambarella Unveils 16-Core CV3 AI Chip to Power Autonomous Vehicles

Ambarella unveils its new CV3 AI domain controller family at CES 2022, offering a powerful solution for autonomous vehicles. The chip delivers up to 500 eTOPS of AI processing performance, marking a 42-fold increase over the company's previous automotive chip generation. It features up to 16 Arm Cortex-A78AE CPU cores that provide a 30 times boost in CPU performance to support complex autonomous vehicle software applications.

This new chip family enables centralized, single-chip processing for multi-sensor perception, including high-resolution vision, radar, and ultrasonic inputs. The system performs deep fusion across these sensor modalities and handles AV path planning. As a result, the CV3 supports robust advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and Level 2+ to Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities even in challenging lighting, weather, and driving conditions.

The CV3 introduces Ambarella's next-generation CVflow architecture and an advanced neural vector processor designed for the latest neural network inferences. It also integrates specialized processors to handle radar perception and classical computer vision tasks efficiently. According to CEO Fermi Wang, this single-chip solution provides unprecedented performance and power efficiency, allowing the automotive industry to run full ADAS and autonomous driving stacks while unlocking greater perception accuracy.
