AMD Reverses Course, Restores Memory Encryption to Consumer Ryzen CPUs
AMD confirms it will restore Transparent Secure Memory Encryption (TSME), also known as Memory Guard, to consumer Ryzen processors through a firmware update scheduled for release next month. The reversal comes just days after reports revealed that the chipmaker had quietly stripped the security feature from non-Pro Ryzen 9000-series desktop CPUs without any official announcement or documentation.
TSME encrypts the entire contents of system memory, protecting sensitive data against physical attacks such as cold boot exploits. AMD originally introduced the feature to high-end processors roughly a decade ago and gradually extended it to lower-end consumer chips. Users grew accustomed to the added protection, and the sudden removal—implemented silently through a firmware update and difficult to detect on Windows machines—sparks immediate and vocal backlash across social media platforms.
Critics accuse AMD of removing the feature to steer customers toward more expensive Pro-tier processors, noting that the change requires no hardware modifications and exists purely as a firmware-level decision. AMD ultimately bows to pressure and pledges to reinstate the BIOS option. The incident raises broader concerns about how much control hardware manufacturers wield over security features long after products reach consumers' hands.
