Andreessen Horowitz Joins Peers With New San Francisco Office

Venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz opens a San Francisco office later this year, ending its long-standing resistance to leaving Menlo Park.

Andreessen Horowitz finally opens a San Francisco office later this year, becoming one of the last top-tier venture firms to establish a presence in the city. The firm signs a lease for space at 180 Townsend Street in the China Basin neighborhood, marking a significant shift for a company that operates exclusively out of Menlo Park since its founding in 2009.

The firm keeps its expansive headquarters on Sand Hill Road and does not plan to rent out an entire building in San Francisco. This decision follows a years-long trend of venture capital firms shifting their operations north to be closer to founders, with peers like Kleiner Perkins, Accel, and General Catalyst already settling into the city's South Park and Jackson Square neighborhoods.

The new location provides a much shorter commute for many of the firm's 150 employees who live in San Francisco. It also allows the firm to build stronger relationships with startup founders who increasingly prefer the city over the quieter, more traditional Silicon Valley suburbs south of the city.
