Android 13 Launches as Global App Spending Growth Stalls

Google releases Android 13 with deep personalization features while global app spending sees only marginal growth compared to last year.

Google rolls out Android 13 to Pixel devices, bringing enhanced personalization features to Android users. The update expands on the Material You interface by allowing users to apply their chosen color schemes and themes to non-Google apps. This approach offers a more elegant solution for icon and interface customization compared to the workaround-heavy methods currently required on iOS.

The new mobile operating system also introduces per-app language settings, which is a highly useful feature for bilingual users. Additionally, Android 13 enables seamless copying of content like URLs, photos, and text between different Android devices. Tablet users benefit from improved multitasking capabilities, and the update expands the bedtime mode with screen dimming options.

These platform updates arrive at a time when the broader app economy shows signs of stabilizing after a period of pandemic-fueled hypergrowth. Global app spending reaches $65 billion in the first half of 2022, representing only a slight increase over the same period last year. Despite this cooling in consumer spending growth, the industry continues to expand steadily following a record-breaking 2021 that saw $133 billion in total global spending.
