Google releases Android Q Beta 3 during its I/O developer conference, marking the final incremental update before the official SDK arrives in Beta 4. This update significantly expands the beta program beyond the Pixel family to include 21 additional devices from manufacturers like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei, LG, and Sony.
The latest beta activates the highly anticipated system-wide Dark Theme, which turns the UI background to true black rather than dark gray for OLED displays. It also introduces revamped gesture controls that replace the traditional back button with an iPhone-style bottom bar, requiring users to swipe inward from the left or right edge of the screen to go back.
Beyond visual changes, Android Q Beta 3 adds native support for foldable displays and 5G networks to prepare for the next generation of smartphones. Google also prioritizes accessibility with a new Live Caption tool that automatically generates captions for any media playing audio on the device, along with built-in Smart Reply functionality directly inside the notification system.
