Palmer Luckey returns to the headset market as his defense company Anduril partners with Microsoft to integrate its software into the military's Integrated Visual Augmentation System. The technology enhances Microsoft's AR headsets, which the U.S. military originally developed in 2021, by feeding critical operational data directly into the user's field of view.
Anduril's software primarily supports training exercises but also provides soldiers with real-time information about drones, ground vehicles, and aerial defense systems that remain outside their visual range. Luckey emphasizes that an augmented-reality display significantly improves lethality and safety, calling it a more impactful upgrade than traditional military gear.
This partnership highlights a highly successful year for Anduril, following a recent contract to build an autonomous fighter jet and a new funding round that values the company at $14 billion. The collaboration merges Microsoft's hardware capabilities with Anduril's advanced software to modernize the combat experience for American troops.
