Anker Unveils Tiny $30 Charger That Powers Laptops
Anker releases a pocket-sized 30-watt charger that uses advanced Gallium Nitride technology to power laptops and tablets for just $30.
Anker introduces the PowerPort Atom PD 1, a remarkably small charger that delivers 30 watts of power in a form factor the size of a standard phone charger. The tiny 1.5-inch cube costs only $30 and matches the power output of Apple's much larger 30-watt USB-C charger. It easily provides enough juice to recharge smartphones, tablets including the iPad Pro, and small laptops like the 13-inch MacBook Air.
The device achieves its minimal footprint by using Gallium Nitride (GaN) components instead of traditional Silicon. GaN technology offers lower resistance and more efficient conductivity, allowing Anker to drastically shrink the internal parts without sacrificing performance. Anker CEO Steven Yang predicts that electronics companies will completely shift away from Silicon to GaN components within the next five years.
Anker originally teases a 27-watt version of this charger in 2018 but increases the power output for the official release. The PowerPort Atom PD 1 hits the market in January, giving consumers a highly portable and affordable charging solution. This release signals a major step forward in making high-power charging universally accessible and travel-friendly.
