Anthropic introduces web search capabilities to its Claude chatbot, a feature that users have long awaited. Paid users in the U.S. can now enable the setting in their profile, which prompts the Claude 3.7 Sonnet model to automatically scour the internet for real-time information to answer questions.
When Claude retrieves information from the web, it includes direct inline citations from various sources such as NPR, Reuters, and social media platforms. This conversational approach to search allows users to receive processed, relevant information without having to click through traditional search engine results.
This update brings Claude to feature parity with rival AI assistants like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, marking a shift from Anthropic's previous stance that Claude was designed to be self-contained. However, the feature carries the same risks as competing tools, as AI chatbots frequently hallucinate or mis-cite web sources when searching for information.
