Anthropic CEO Calls for Slowing AI Development with Three-Step Safety Plan

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argues that it is time to pump the brakes on AI development. In a new essay, he lays out a three-step plan to "pace the frontier," meaning slowing the pace of training and development so companies can build safeguards and regulators can evaluate models. As a first step, Anthropic is giving third-party evaluators like METR access to its models to verify adherence to safety practices and commitments.

The second step calls for the AI industry to come together, likely with government agencies, to establish common safety standards and limits on unchecked AI progress. Amodei focuses this effort on companies operating in democratic countries, acknowledging that passing laws and building regulatory infrastructure takes time. In the meantime, he says the industry should cooperate to create safety standards on its own.

The third and most difficult step is getting authoritarian governments, such as those in China and Russia, to agree to slow development and adopt global AI safety standards. Amodei argues it remains crucial that the US and other democracies maintain a technological lead over authoritarian regimes by limiting their access to advanced AI capabilities.
