Anthropic Claude Opus 4.1 Arrives as Public Preview in GitHub Copilot
Anthropic's most capable model, Claude Opus 4.1, is now available in public preview for GitHub Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ users. The new model brings enhanced extended thinking and tool use capabilities to popular developer environments.
Anthropic releases Claude Opus 4.1 as a public preview in GitHub Copilot, bringing its most capable model yet to developers. As the direct successor to Claude Opus 4, this new version supports advanced extended thinking combined with tool use and logical summaries to assist with complex programming tasks.
The new model is exclusively available to subscribers on Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ plans. Developers access Opus 4.1 through the chat model picker on github.com, Visual Studio Code, and GitHub Mobile, though the VS Code integration currently limits the model to ask mode. GitHub rolls out this access gradually over several hours, meaning eligible users need to check back if they do not see the option immediately.
Organization administrators must manually enable access to the new model through a specific policy in the Copilot settings before it appears for their users. Meanwhile, the previous Claude Opus 4 model remains visible in the picker but faces deprecation in just 15 days, pushing teams to transition quickly to the updated version.
