Anthropic Confirms Wet Biology Lab for AI-Driven Experiments
Anthropic confirms that it operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area, where it uses its AI models to help run physical experiments. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, tells Reuters that the final test in biology remains real lab work, and the company is doing that today. The lab functions like a typical biotech facility, with Anthropic conducting some research in-house while collaborating with external partners.
Anthropic declines to share specifics about the lab's projects but says the primary focus is fundamental biology rather than drug discovery. This distinction appears deliberate, as the company wants to avoid competing with the pharmaceutical industry, where it counts major customers and partners, including a newly announced drug discovery collaboration with Novo Nordisk. The move follows Anthropic's April acquisition of stealth AI biotech Coefficient Bio. This week, the company also launches a Life Sciences Verification Program to give vetted bio researchers access to its most powerful models, alongside published research reports on protein design and biomolecular modeling.
The revelation draws scrutiny because it contrasts sharply with Anthropic's own dire safety warnings. Researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigns, warning that AI builders earnestly believe the technology could kill humanity by the end of the decade, and Anthropic's alignment lead estimates greater than 10% odds of AI-driven extinction within ten years. CEO Dario Amodei publishes a post calling on the industry to slow down and self-regulate, and he repeatedly names bioterrorism as one of AI's biggest risks. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya sums up the irony on X, jokingly describing Anthropic as the group behind "We're All Going to Die" and "Regulate."
