Anthropic Enables Claude Code Auto Mode by Default for Paid Users
Anthropic announces that Claude Code's auto mode is becoming the default experience for Pro, Max, and Team accounts starting August 14. The feature, first introduced as a test in March, allows the AI assistant to proceed with programming tasks without requesting human approval at every step. Instead, the system only pauses when it detects actions it deems irreversible, destructive, or outside the user's environment.
The company points to internal testing data showing that auto mode is actually safer than relying on human oversight. In a study involving 1,053 paid testers, the automated system catches 89% of harmful actions, while manual review only catches 13.6%. Anthropic notes that manual approval becomes largely ineffective in practice because users approve a striking 97% of all permission prompts without meaningful review.
To address potential safety concerns, Anthropic adds new protective measures including prompt injection screening and customizable rules that can hard-block specific actions like data exfiltration. Claude Code Head Boris Cherny reports that the team uses auto mode exclusively and cannot imagine returning to constant permission prompts. The changes reflect a broader push toward greater AI autonomy in software development workflows.
