Anthropic Introduces Claude AI Chatbot to Challenge ChatGPT
Anthropic launches Claude, a new AI chatbot designed to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT with improved safety and steerability. The startup currently offers the tool through an API to select organizational partners.
Anthropic, a startup founded by former OpenAI employees, launches Claude today as a direct rival to ChatGPT. The new AI chatbot performs a variety of tasks such as summarizing documents, coding, writing, and answering questions. Anthropic claims that Claude stands out because it produces fewer harmful outputs, offers easier conversations, and provides users with better overall control.
The company makes two versions of the chatbot available through an API: the standard Claude and a faster, more affordable model called Claude Instant. Several major tech platforms already integrate this new technology into their services. Notion uses Claude for its AI writing assistant, DuckDuckGo utilizes it for the DuckAssist search feature, and Quora provides access through its Poe app.
Like ChatGPT, Claude lacks live internet access and relies on training data from up to spring 2021. However, Anthropic specifically trains Claude to avoid toxic, racist, and sexist language while refusing to assist with illegal activities. This focused safety training represents Anthropic's effort to solve the common pitfalls of modern chatbots, though it remains to be seen how well it avoids hallucinations in real-world use.
