Anthropic releases Claude 3.5 Sonnet, a new generative AI model that handles both text and image analysis. The model outperforms Anthropic's previous flagship, Claude 3 Opus, across various benchmarks for reading, coding, math, and vision. It also narrowly beats rival models like OpenAI's GPT-4o on several tested metrics, although benchmarks do not always reflect everyday usability.
Speed and vision capabilities see significant upgrades in this release. Claude 3.5 Sonnet operates at twice the speed of Claude 3 Opus, making it highly suitable for real-time applications like customer service chatbots. Additionally, the model shows major improvements in interpreting charts, graphs, and distorted images, which Anthropic achieves through architectural tweaks and new training data sets.
Alongside the model, Anthropic introduces Artifacts, a preview workspace where users edit and build upon AI-generated code and documents. The company plans to add team collaboration features and knowledge base storage to Artifacts soon. Anthropic emphasizes that meeting actual business needs matters more to enterprise customers than achieving top scores on esoteric benchmark tests.
