Anthropic Launches Cowork to Bring Agent AI to Non-Technical Users

Anthropic introduces a new tool called Cowork that brings the power of Claude Code to non-technical users directly within the Claude Desktop app. Users simply designate a specific folder where Claude can read or modify files, and they control the tool through the standard chat interface. This setup creates a sandboxed environment that works exactly like Claude Code but removes the need for command-line tools or virtual environments.
The new tool is available as a research preview exclusively for Max subscribers, with a waitlist open for users on other plans. Anthropic creates Cowork after noticing many subscribers use Claude Code for general-purpose tasks instead of just programming. The system handles non-coding workloads such as assembling expense reports from receipt photos, managing media files, and scanning social media posts.
Because Cowork operates autonomously and takes multiple actions without user input, Anthropic warns about potential risks like prompt injection or accidental file deletion. The company recommends that users provide clear and unambiguous instructions to keep their files safe. Cowork runs on the Claude Agent SDK and represents Anthropic's latest effort to expand its highly successful Claude Code product into more accessible formats.
