Anthropic Launches Web Search API to Keep Claude AI Updated
Anthropic introduces a new API that enables Claude models to search the web for real-time information, eliminating the need for developers to build their own search infrastructure. The tool uses reasoning to decide when to search and provides answers with citations.
Anthropic releases a new API that allows its Claude AI models to search the web for current information. Developers use this tool to build applications that provide up-to-date answers without managing their own search infrastructure. The company states that this addition helps Claude access real-world data alongside its existing knowledge base.
When the web search feature is enabled, Claude uses its reasoning capabilities to determine if a request requires fresh or specialized information. If a search is necessary, the AI generates a query, retrieves results, analyzes them, and delivers an answer with proper citations. Claude can also refine its searches and conduct multiple queries, while developers maintain control over allowed and blocked domains.
Pricing for the new web search API starts at $10 per 1,000 searches and supports models like Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku. In addition to the API, Anthropic is bringing web search capabilities to Claude Code, a tool that helps developers complete coding tasks by accessing current API documentation and technical articles.
